Specialty Heat Treating, Inc. Elkhart, IN, is now offering NITROFLEX® or the Ferritic Nitrocarburizing process to its customers. NITROFLEX® blends nitrogen, ammonia and other proprietary gas combinations to transfer carbon and nitrogen to the surface of ferrous metals. The typical uses and benefits of the NITROFLEX® system are:

• Increased wear resistance and fatigue as well as improved corrosion resistance.

• Typically used on carbon and low alloy steels but is not limited to these materials. The process can also be used on cast irons and some tool steel grades.

• Thickness and porosity of the hardened surface can be accurately determined through the flexibility of atmosphere control with NITROFLEX® system.

• Close control of the atmosphere composition enables us to dial in the process resulting in the best combination of properties relating to wear, fatigue and corrosion resistance.

• Using a post oxidation treatment allows the creation of a black surface that is both tough and attractive without the problems associated with salt-bath wastes.

• It is a cleaner more flexible and environmentally better alternative to generator-based systems and salt baths.

• The low temperature process results in lower distortion compared to other, higher temperature processes.The process does not require oil quenching to achieve surface hardness. Oil quenching can be used in some applications.

• Some applications allow parts that typically require gas carburizing and oil quenching to a low case depth to be nitrocarburized using NITROFLEX®.

•  Lower part cost can result from reduced distortion and elimination of post-process machining operations.
